| Yfirlit og innihald 3.2.1: | These are minutes from a well known meeting in Icelandic history, the National Convention in 1851, but at that time Iceland was ruled by the Danish crown. The meeting was organized by the Danish government in Reykjavík on 9th of August where the Danish government submitted a bill with the intention to bring Icelanders a new constituion. This new constitution would limit the rights of Icelanders and thereby ignoring their wishes.
Then the Icelandic representatives submitted another bill which the royal representative did not agree with and decided to resolve the meeting in the name of the king. The Icelandic representatives objected to this and in the end of the meeting most of them spoke up in one voice: "We All Protest!" (Vér mótmælum allir!). This is one of the most important events in Iceland's struggle for the independence of the nation. |
